Meet the 'Sassy Belles': 'The Sassy Belles' and 'The Wedding Belles' by Beth Albright

The older I get, the more I realize that life just does not flow as planned. And sometimes, the heaviness, the disappointment, or the stress of it all just feels too much to carry. Some people, when overwhelmed, might drink, smoke, swear, sleep around or gamble to ‘blow off some steam’. I read romance novels. I will drown myself in these stories that always end happily, consuming 3 or 4 (or more!) in a frenzied week. Enter, ‘The Sassy Belles’ series.

I have a recent obsession with the deep south – the accents, the food, the pace, the mindsets – so I knew I would enjoy ‘The Sassy Belles’ and, second book in the series, ‘The Wedding Belles’. The stories are set in Tuscaloosa, I place I have never visited or would even be able to point out on a map , but is written with such appeal by author, Beth Albright, that I am wondering if I need to take a trip. Best friends, Blake and Vivi – the Sassy Belles – are the heroines of these admittedly far-fetched, silly, and fabulously quaint/heartwarming stories.

‘Somehow I knew my halo didn’t quite fit anymore.’

In ‘The Sassy Belles’, you meet lawyer Blake and her best friend Vivi – two well-to-do, gorgeous southern ladies who have a small problem – Vivi may have killed her lover in the middle of a midday romp. Meanwhile, level-headed, good-girl Blake is reconnected with her high school sweetheart as her rocky marriage slowly crumbles. Highjinks ensue. Lust abounds. Laughter flows. And everything is wrapped up in a perfect pink bow by the end.

The story then continues into, ‘The Wedding Belles’, with (HERE COMES A SPOILER) Vivi trying to marry her very much alive lover and running into a small issue when it is discovered that he is already hitched. Again, this second book offers a plot that is far-fetched and nonsensical, but soothing. Pleasant. Satisfying.

If you are looking for Shakespeare, Albright’s Belles are not for you. If you are looking for a fabulous way to while away a pleasant afternoon, these girls are your ticket to a little taste of Alabama and a large helping of giggles.
